What's new? Well at last our new web site! Please go visit us at www.nuno-id.com

I am proud to present you our first newsletter. This will be issued each month and will share thoughts on novel (and common sense!) approaches in economic and community development, management, personal development, world economics and finance.

Like never before, you are called upon to deliver essential services to improve the life in your community. But your organization will be as effective as the individuals who serve in their management roles. My goal is to make you more effective and successful in fulfilling your mission.

Nuno ID finds inspiration in the applied concept of a number of scholars and practitioners we meet in our work and continued learning with leaders around the world. Community and economic development are knowledge organizations and they will only yield results if they are working on the right things not mainly being very efficient at doing the wrong things (like a commodity). For that, we need to think. Critically. And act. This newsletter will bring you inspiring ideas that will help you steer your organization into these activities where you can make a unique and significant contribution of value to your business community and constituencies.

Drucker and Community Leaders

Nuno ID represented Canada at the Global Drucker Symposium in June 2008 in Claremont CA.

I was one of the privileged few from Canada to be invited to the Global Drucker Symposium in Claremont, California in June. I hear some ask: What does Drucker have to do with economic development? Well a lot in fact. In this profession we tend to think in terms of incentives, capital, real estate, marketing and attracting and it’s all good but first, someone (an organization) needs to manage these activities to yield results. That’s called effective management. EDOs are only as effective as the individuals who serve in their leadership and management roles. Peter F. Drucker, the father of management, wrote a lot about the knowledge worker (he coined the term as early as the 1960s) and its necessity to be not only efficient (doing things well) but effective (doing the right things). He also worked with the major corporations in the world and the growing non profit sector. The EDOs are both knowledge and non profit organizations. So all that to say, in this fast pace changing world, his work for better economic and community development is more relevant than ever.

The conference was held in Claremont CA, at the Drucker Institute (part of the Claremont Graduate Studies University) and attracted people from around the world (Japan, China, Korea, Dubai, USA, Canada,Germany, Switzerland). I gladly found an eclectic group of accomplished people from many cultural and professional backgrounds (profit and non profit), promoting a common spirit of contributing to making the world a better place than we found it. It created a unique uplifting global village experience.

Here are some highlights and the connections with your work as community leaders. Read More

You may ask why the name Nuno ID. It is after one of the best equestrian rider of the 20th century: Nuno Oliveira. When you saw him ride, he was like the mythic Centaur. It is this illusion that we pursue as riders: a total harmony between horse and rider. Nuno mastered the forces of the horse and his own body in a very “martial art” way, by finding the path to least resistance and using what the horse offers to create a work of art. It is in his quest for joining the opposites together and reconciling them within himself that he could offer those “moments of eternity”. That looks a lot like life itself.

Now what about Nuno ID and my work? Well everything is one thing and one thing only, as they say. This philosophy of riding is also guiding me in my consulting practice as I am careful not to mistake the means for the end. It’s not about the methods or the science but about how I can assist others through their use. So it has some kind of metaphysical implication. When I ride my horse, I feel it is God saying hello.
