When you look around, it's hard to see one industry that is not hit by the economic downturn. But there is one fledging industry that is at least seeing a boom in investment and sales growth: alternative energy. We could say that the position taken by the Obama administration and the fact that many are seeing it as the new internet give hope to some investors and entrepreneurs.
Venture capital financing tanked last year in all sectors except in the Clean Tech industry – investors poured $8.4 B in the US – up 40% from 2007.
As most sectors and especially high tech sectors, they are very dependent on the right mix of government regulations and policies. The timing between the policies being played out and the companies taking advantage of the new environment is crucial. Still, things that range from solar-panel manufacturers to centralized power consumption control software are picking up demand. Saving energy and cutting cost are obvious issues in this new environment.
